题目:Impact of Human Emission and Climate Change on the Global Biogeochemical Cycle of Persistent Contaminants: Insights from an Earth System Modeling Approach

摘要:Persistent contaminants are elements and compounds  that are resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes. These contaminants undergo long-range transport and cycle among the atmosphere, land and ocean reservoirs, and are accumulated and magnified in food web and eventually pose risk to the ecosystem and the human health. My research is highly interdisciplinary and focuses in the emission, chemistry and transport of persistent contaminants in the environment, their interaction with the ecosystem, and impact on human health. 
In this talk, I will use mercury(Hg) as an example to showcase my research theme and initiate potential collaborations. My talk first introduces the development of the first global three-dimensional model for ocean Hg, and its application in tracking the influence of human emissions on global Hg cycle. The second part extends the model to include organic Hg chemicals (that are more toxic) and covers the formation and food web dynamics of methyl mercury. The last part is about using an Earth system modeling approach to predict the impact of climate change and ocean acidification on marine methyl mercury cycle in the 21st century.
