Nanjing University conferred Professor Kerry Andrew Emanuel of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) the honorary professor, and conferring ceremony and was held at Zijin Hall of Nanjing University International Conference Center on the morning of June 27, 2018. Before the ceremony, Professor Jian Lyu, Nanjing University president, Professor Zhemin Tan and Professor Zhenlin Wang, vice president of Nanjing University met with Dr. Kerry Andrew Emanuel and other four well-known scholars in tropical cyclone research. President Jian Lyu paid tribute to and welcomed them. He had high expectations and was confident for the development of cooperative relations between Nanjing University and American scholars, and hoped that SAS, Nanjing University can cooperate further on research and discipline construction with American scholars. Dr. Kerry Andrew Emanuel thanked President Jian Lyu and Nanjing University for the warm welcome and reception, and looked forward to maintaining a long-term cooperation with Nanjing University, especially in field of atmospheric dynamics with SAS.
Professor Zhemin Tan, Nanjing University vice president, presided over the conferring ceremony. Professor Zhemin Tan first introduced Dr. Kerry Andrew Emanuel's academic experience and major research achievements. Dr. Kerry Andrew Emanuel, co-director of Lorenz Center, MIT, is a prominent meteorologist and climate scientist and enjoys high reputation in tropical convection and tropical cyclones. He was elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2007 and as member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. He was named one of the Time 100 influential people of 2006.
Vice President Zhenlin Wang read out Nanjing University's decision on conferring Professor Kerry Andrew Emanuel Honorary Professor. President Jian Lyu presented certificate to Kerry Andrew Emanuel. After the ceremony, Kerry Andrew Emanuel gave a one-hour seminar, systematically introducing the development and strengthening process of tropical cyclones and the influence of climate change on their development.
Over 200 people attended the ceremony, including Professor Chongyin Li, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Congbin Fu, Professor Yihui Ding, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and experts and scholars of tropical cyclone research at home and abroad.
After the ceremony, Professor Kerry Andrew Emanuel joined the International Workshop and Summer School on Tropical Convection, Tropical Cyclones, and Associated Multiscale Processes organized by the Key Laboratory of Mesoscale Severe Weather (Nanjing University). He gave an invited lecture entitled 'Physics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation' during the workshop and gave four lectures during the summer school, systematically expounding on the tropical convection, tropical cyclones and relevant issues from fundamental theories to the latest development.
